Cyprus Virtual Fieldtrips
Cyprus
Cyprus is an island of European Union with high diversity of habitats and species.
Is a very bio-diverse Mediterranean island having 9,251 Km2 of land area which makes it the third largest island in Mediterranean after Sardinia and Sicily.
The precipitation and temperature of Cyprus varies because of its location, as it is a crossroad of three continents: Asia, Africa and Europe. Therefore instead of an only Mediterranean climate it has semi-desert habitats like in Mesaoria, grasslands, and mountains that have forests with pine and oak trees.
All those different habitats of Cyprus create a variety in both fauna and flora resulting very different ecosystems that can be located o mountains, around rivers or sea, salted lakes etc.
The variety of landscapes and the fact that it is an island there is isolation in species and an increase in the number of endemic species.
