Akrotiri Salt Lake

We are now going to watch the Akrotiri Salt Lake

The Akrotiri Salt Lake is located in the city of Limassol and is one of the most important salt lakes of Cyprus together with the salt lake of Larnaca. The Akrotiri salt lake is between two beaches, the Episkopi beach and the Lady’s mile beach. It covers an area of 10.65 square km.  Since the climatic environment of the area is Mediterranean, the salt lake is usually dry on the summer time and has more water in the winter due to the rainfall. The salinity of the lake in the spring is not very high and it is a source for many mosquitos. The depth of the lake can reach 1 metre, but the 50 percent of the lake is below 30 centimetres, this is why many birds use it as a stop during their migration. In the winter months between 2,000 and 20,000 Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) visit the Akrotiri salt lake. Other species of birds that visit the area are the cranes, the waders and birds of prey.
