Nature trail: Caledonia Platres

We are now going to watch the Kaledonia Platres nature trail

The Kaledonia nature trail is located in Platres in the Troodos Forest Mountains. The name Kaledonian was given by the Scottish as it reminded them their home country Scotland, which has the Latin name Caledonia given by the Romans in the ancient years. It’s one of the most beautiful nature trails of Cyprus, that besides the interesting flora and fauna of the area, it also has a waterfall called Millomeris. The main purpose of the Kaledonia nature trail is to conserve, protect the nature and educate the visitors about the ecology of the area. The trail is 3km long and it ends up at ‘Psilo Dentro’, where is an alternative entry of this trail and it takes about 1 to 2 hours to finish it. It is not a very easy trail as it has slippery rocks due to the small river of ‘Kryos potamos’ meaning ‘Cold River’ in Greek. The area is very rich in both flora and fauna species. Here you can see the oriental Plane (Platanus orientalis), Alder tree (Alnus orientalis), black pine (Pinus nigra), Aleppo pine (Pinus brutia), golden oak (Quercus alnifolia), ivy (Hedera helix), wild roses (Rosa canina), barberry, ferns, mosses etc. Many birds live and visit the area, such as the Vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Corvus corax and the Upupa epops, but the dominate bird of the area is the Nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos). Also many reptiles such as the chameleon, lizards and snakes can be found in this area. The waterfall of Millomeris attracts many birds and other species as it has cold and clean water.
